Meet Peyton~ my Northampton High School Senior Rep for the class of 2012. P is beautiful, inside and out and can make me laugh until my sides hurt. She proved that to me when we meet for her senior portraits a few weeks back. We went around the town of Cape Charles, stopping at every old building, train, field and beach we could find. P is such a trooper, and the best thing about seniors are they are CRAZY! They will do anything to get that great picture and I am SO lucky to be able to capture it for them. You'll have to ask P what happened on the beach, because I can't tell it, it just too funny! (falling down hills :) ) hehe... I can't believe B is already 9 months old (well when we took these photos) Its been over a month or two and I just am getting to them to put them up on my blog. Each and every homecoming that I have photographed has always gotten to me. This one is no different. K emailed me a while ago asking me to photograph her husbands homecoming. I was so excited to do it! Especially since this was my first big carrier homecoming. Of course they decided to come in early and I wasn't there to see the ship dock, but its still a site to see! Being a oplove photographer means the world to me! Because I know how much these little moments mean to the family and how much these moments should be documented. After the homecoming on base, we went down to their oldest daughters school, where she had NO idea daddy was coming home today. Mom had her get all dressed up saying she needed to make sure her dress fit for when daddy did come home he would see her in it. Nothing could have made the day better than her seeing her daddy that day.

I told A that I was there to take pictures of cute little girls who decided to dress up today. So she gave me a model pose :)

A few weekends ago I got to meet a family of three little ones. Mom and dad opted out of pictures (hopefully we will get together again for a whole family session), so it was just me and the three little ones. We met at BayCreek in Cape Charles from some photos. Big Brother loved the camera as well as little brother, but little sister I had to work for :) Thats the joy of my job and even though its hard work, I love it! EVERY. SINGLE. E & T E Session { Virginia Engagement/Wedding Photographer}

E and I have known each other for a while now. We went to college together and were in the same sorority together. When E asked me to be her wedding photographer, I couldn't have been more happy for her that she was getting married and that she asked me to photograph it. E, T and I met at Maymont Park for their engagement photos. It was a perfect day, not too hot and the flowers were amazing. I had a hard time choosing my usual six pictures for this sneak because every photo was lovely. You can really see how much this couple loves each other and how much fun they have with each other. Predeployment R Family {Virginia Hampton Roads Oplove Photographer}

Many of you know that I am a member of a wonderful group called Operation: Love Reunited. This organization is very dear to my heart as I know, understand and feel what each and every one of these people are going through. The military (and my husband) has done so much for our country that giving back some more on my behalf is what I don't mind doing for any military family.

The R family is about to go through their first deployment. Even though L has been in the military for 8 years, he has been one of the lucky ones not to be deployed. We met at downtown Williamsburg for their shoot. Little A wasn't into pictures as much as we would have liked, but you can't expect anything less with a 2 year old. She wanted to see the horses, so we saw horses, birds, more horses, squirrels and more horses. :) Thank you M for contacting me through oplove to be your photographer. And L be safe! See you soon! I met the L family at Cape Charles Beach a few Sundays ago. Seeing two little blonde head boys coming out of the car made me know that I was going to have a lot of fun with this family! P Family {Virginia Family Photographer}

I have known D for some time now. We went to highschool together and now she has a beautiful family! Baby J is no exception to beautiful- just look at him with those big blue eyes and baby gap model material! I absolutely love babies at this age because one ~they can't move, two ~they have the CUTEST expressions and three~ you can just cuddle them all day long.

The P Family and I met close to Silver Beach on the Eastern Shore for some photos. After stopping for some small breaks we had a great time. This family is not just beautiful on the outside, they are beautiful in the inside and they have been through alot this past year. I am just so happy to know them. M & J {Virginia Childrens Photographer}

I love it when a client comes back more than once to have their children photos done. It helps me get to know the kids more and the same with them. Its makes the session go by smoother, or so you would think. The W family has two very cute kids, one very spirited and one very quiet. They remind me of my own two kids :)
We met at Baycreek in Cape Charles. It was a bit chilly out but you wouldn't have known with running around chasing two little ones. It actually turned out to be a great day and session Thanks again C for allowing me to photograph your adorable kids!

With kids this age, you have to act like a kid to get THAT smile you want~ we were playing hide and seek :)

Boys in hats are just SO CUTE, and I love it when a client brings their own "props" ~

This next set of pictures shows how much I mean when I say, you have to act like a kid to get them to want to "play" with you~meaning you have to get on the ground! Little M wanted nothing to do with my camera until I started getting the tickle monster out...

7 1/2 months Old { Baby's First Year Plan- Virginia Photographer}

I can not believe it has been already almost 8 months since the first time that I got to photograph this sweet child. I LOVE how the baby's first year plan shows how much they grow SO fast and how much these memories will always be in the families hearts and on their walls. Our 6 month session turned into our almost 8 month session, which is okay because I will get to see Baby K at 18 months as well :) And by that time, she will be a big sister and I hope I get to photograph the newest addition as well.

Why Cut Budgets On Something SO Important?

Ive been wanting to write this for a while now and I just didn't know how to put it in words... I just hope this will help you when deciding on your photographer as well as your photography~

People spend hundreds of dollars on engagement parties, bridal parties, decorations for their weddings, food, and gifts, but when it comes to “being on a budget”, they choose their wedding pictures as something to cut. Weddings pictures are something that LAST a lifetime, something the most important people in your life will see forever. You will only get to make this important decision once and when the wedding is over there are only a few things you will have left ~the ring, the dress, the wife/husband and the photography.

I see a lot of brides and grooms go to someone that they know, who own a nice camera and decide to use them as their wedding photographer to cut cost. When they get their photos back, they are kicking themselves for not spending another few hundred dollars to get better quality photos from a professional photographer who has been doing it for years and it shows in their work.

Here are SEVEN reasons why you should choose a PROFESSIONAL photographer over the hobbyist:

1. They will be able to anticipate what is about to happen and be in the right place at the right time. Professional photographers can walk any environment and foresee where to go and how to get the best shots in a fraction of a second.

2. Consistency in the quality of photos. Amateurs believe if they shoot enough photos you should end up with a few good ones. It doesn’t work that way and 10,000 non professional shots will never rival 500 taken by a professional. Taking multiple images from the same bad angle with poor lighting won’t make a shot any better.

3. They have dealt with hundreds of couples and know what they expect from a coverage as well as what the family will hope to see.

4. Ability to deal with any adversity with the weather or drama that might arise on the day. Unplanned delays due to traffic or lack of light at the end of the day. Even when there are wardrobe mishaps your photographer can give you advice on how to avoid this becoming an issue in your photos.

5. Experienced photographers make you feel more relaxed as they are confident with their photography and reassure you that all is going well. They know what to say and what not to say. You and your bridal party will enjoy the experience of the professionalism and be more willing to participate in the photography.

6. They know how to create a special photo opportunity. Even if you want natural photojournalistic shots there are moments that need the photographers input, otherwise the shots might just look amateurish and boring. It is a mistake to believe that amazing photos will appear all day out of nowhere. A few subtle tweaks can make a shot go from dull to extraordinary and still be candid and natural.

7. Getting the most flattering angles to make you look great in your photos. This is a day where everyone is at their best and a professional photographer knows which angles and lighting will bring out the most attractive images of you. They also have equipment that will avoid red eye from flash photography and have tricks to avoid reflections in glasses. So you will look thinner, taller and stunning if you pick a professional photographer.

Your wedding photos aren’t worth risking so choose a professional wedding photographer who can match your style and capture your beauty on your big day. Remember, just because you like them as a person, doesn’t mean their style will match up to what you have in mind for your big day.

The Bottom-Line: With regards to Professional Photography, you absolutely get what you pay for! Inexperienced, non-professional photographers will often make several critical errors during your event. They can not be re-done as there just one opportunity to capture certain moments! Therefore, ask yourself this question: If I could hire a Professional Photographer and know that my images will be captured and kept safe, is this worth it to me? If the answer is “yes” then you have made a wise decision! If the answer is “no” then keep in mind the risks involved in losing precious moments forever.

Looking for Senior Rep Models for Graduate Class of 2012! I'll be choosing ONE highschool senior from each of these high schools: Middlesex High, Gloucester High, Mathews High, Northampton High and Nandua High.

What is a Senior Rep Model?

They are spokesmodels that help promote Jackie Ranson Photography with their own amazing portraits. An ideal senior rep model has lots of friends and is a very outgoing and energetic person. Please only submit applications if you’re serious about this.

In order to be a senior rep, you must:

• Have great style, lots of personality and enjoy being in front of the camera!

• Be a current high school junior graduating in 2012

• Go to High School at: Middlesex, Gloucester, Mathews, Northampton or Nandua

• Agree to tell your friends and classmates Jackie Ranson Photography and share your senior portraits with them.

• Have a Facebook and post your photos in an album called Jackie Ranson Photography!

• Have your parents or legal guardians sign a model release form.

• Agree to represent ONLY Jackie Ranson Photography and use these images as your senior pictures.

What’s in it for you?

* The chosen seniors will get (1 or 2) FREE 2 hour session. (one spring and one fall)

* 50 rep cards to pass out to other seniors and friends with my studio information.

* A proof book to show off to all your friends and family.

* Web sized images for facebook.

* For every senior that books a session with me using your rep cards, you will receive a complimentary $20 print credit. There is no limit on how much you can earn, most senior reps will get an entire senior package for free from referring people.

Marie Maternity { Virginia Maternity/Newborn Photographer}

This isn't just another maternity session. This belly has my #2 niece in it! So this session is a little dear to my heart and I am so happy that I get to capture the beauty in my sister in law as she continues to be beautiful throughout her pregnancy.
On Saturday we went down to the river by my house to take a few of Marie and some with Little M (niece #1). Little M wasn't into it as much as we would have liked but we still got some cute ones of her with baby belly.

After a few down by the river, we left Little M with my amazing husband who had to watch both our girls and Little M,(thanks babe) we traveled around Middlesex looking for locations. Glad we found what we did- a wheat field and an abandoned building.. two of my favorites~

I can't wait to meet her and to photograph her newborn shoot!! Only a few more weeks until Baby G comes!!

Meet Jasmine, my teen model for Jackie Ranson Photography. Isn't she gorgeous! On monday we went down to her great grandmothers old place, a photographers dream come true. Old barns, old houses and wheat fields!! And the best thing was it was cloudy so no harsh sun! I love teenagers, because they are so good with direction and Jasmine was a natural!

I am looking for more babies and toddlers to be willing to model a few props as well as being the face of Jackie Ranson Photography Newborn/Toddler Package Plan. I have always wanted to focus more on newborns and children and what a better way to start than to have a contest. That being said- I don't want anyone thinking that I am going to mainly focus on JUST newborns and children. I will still be photographing engagements and weddings :) Don't worry!

What to do to become a Model Rep:

* You need to be a parent with young children OR a newly engaged/married couple.
* You need to be from the state of Virginia. If you are more than 50 miles away from my area (not including esva), you will be willing to come to me.

Saturday, in the bitty sweet cold, I met the cutest couple ever! Julie and Danny are getting married at Beth Page in Urbanna in June. We did some engagement photos at Beth Page this past weekend. The weather was beautiful as long as the wind stayed away. Hello and Welcome to the new blog of Jackie Ranson Photography! A Big thank you to Kimmie from Blue Paper Lanterns for working so hard on it for me.

I have a few new items for the new year that I am really excited to be able to offer to my wonderful clients!

The biggest thing that I have added to almost all wedding packages this year are the Layflat Coffee Table books! These are also available with any session and come in 4 different sizes!

The next new thing for 2011 are Custom Made Image Boxes for 4x6, 5x7s and wallets! These are available with ANY session and make great gifts!

I am also offering bounded proof books~ these come in 4x6s or 5x7s! They are great brag books for grandparents or that special someone. And are included in most Senior Portrait Packages!

Remember this couple~ They tied the knot right before Christmas! What an amazing Christmas present! To be husband and wife and share their first Christmas in Aruba! Jessica and Tim got married at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Purcellville, Virginia. It was a beautiful wedding! Thank you guys for allowing me to share your wonderful day (and for being so patient with me that day- of all days to get sick!)! Congrats!!

Right before they were pronounced husband and wife, Tim had a small surprise for Jessica~ he wrote her a song and played and sang to her~ Now being a music major and married to a music major, this really got to me :) how sweet he is!

I couldn't help but to post these two of the youngest flower girl- she reminded me so much of my oldest daughter :) how cute is she?!

A Family Tradition~ my great grandmother crocheted these snowflakes and gave a set to each one of her grandchildren. we put them on right before Christmas, I was happy to be able to do this tradition again, while I was visiting with my family.

Welcome Home USS Oscar Austin!
As some of you already know, I recently became a member of Operation Love: Reunited (http://www.oplove.org/). A few weeks ago I had the honor to photograph my first homecoming at the Norfolk Naval Base for USS Oscar Austin. Being a marine wife, I know the waiting, the disappointment and the excitement of seeing the one you love again after a long time. Being able to photograph this memory for someone is extremely a huge honor and I am so glad to say I am a member of this group.

I had the great experience of shooting the homecoming of this amazing ship and watching the reuniting of hundreds of families as I shot the reuniting of one couple particularly. It was awe inspiring. A wonderfully emotional awe inspiring morning. It was such a cold day waiting for the ship to come in, but to see the emotions that was running through the place was all worth it. What a wonderful holiday gift! This preview is from a wonderful couple who had been apart during their marriage almost as long as they have been together as a married couple. Erica and Andy, even though I just met them that day, seeing how they reunited with each other, made me proud even more to be a marine wife and to see how much our service men and woman mean to this country.

Thank you so much Erica for choosing me to be your oplove photographer! It was so great to meet you and Andy, Welcome Home! Thank you so much for what you have done for our country! Enjoy your preview. I can't wait for you to see the rest!

Day 21

So I started my Day 21 really really early this morning. My first picture was actually right at 12:00 midnight! I wanted to take a picture of the moon for the lunar eclipse. I want to add that I have NEVER done this before and I really don't know what I am doing when you photograph the moon, let alone a lunar eclipse!

Here is what our moon looked like at Midnight (right before I passed out)

I set my alarm for 2:45 a.m. so I can get up and get my tripod out and ready for the lunar eclipse. Walked outside and saw it a bit cloudy, but tried my best anyway to capture it. IF i get to see another lunar eclipse, i want to read up a little more on how to get a better shot, but for my first time, I thought it turned out okay~

3:00 a.m.

And then when I was driving home from work tonight I saw how big the moon was STILL and thought I would take just another one, this time, it was lower and right between my trees in my back yard

So only FOUR days til Christmas! I can't believe it!

Day 18 - Today was a day of the perfect love, the perfect couple and a perfect wedding. I wasn't going to show a wedding picture for my 25 days of Christmas, but i was really under the weather this day and didn't take any others. AND I just couldn't resist this one :)

Day 19- Christmas lights, and candles and peppermint candy canes...These are a few of my favorite things...

Day 20- Being deployed feels like a lifetime of waiting.. but when you finally get to see the one you love walk back into your arms, its oh so worth it. Welcome Home USS Oscar Austin! From my oplove session that morning. This makes me proud to be a photographer and a military wife all at the same time!

Day 16 and a Snow Day

I saw this done before and thought I would give it a try whenever we had snow.. And today it was a beautiful snow day!

The schools were closed today due to the weather and after I got off of work early, kylie and I went out to play in the snow-

Natalie wasn't feeling too well today or I would have brought her out in the snow as well, but she did get to see it for the first time (that she realizes) through my bedroom door.. it was priceless her reaction, i wish i could have gotten the squeals in my pictures.

I was asked a few weeks ago if I was interested in playing my flute for the 4th and 5th grade choir at the elementary school my daughter goes too. As a person who can't really say no, I picked up my flute from the corner in the bedroom, full of dust and played. I haven't played in a long time and I am really glad that I said yes, even if it was just for a small elementary choir Christmas program, I enjoyed it and it made me realize how much I really miss playing and how much music really has meant in my life.

25 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS

I've been thinking about doing this all year long.. Its called The 25 Days of Christmas Photo Challenge (If you wanna join me, please let me know so I can tag you for others to watch your photos as well). Since Christmas is MY FAVORITE TIME OF YEAR, I want to be able to show my love for this month and holiday in photos. And since its only 25 days- I think I can handle it :) Today is December 1st.. and my first photo...will have to wait til I get home tonight, but keep a look out!

Whoever said photographing twins was a breeze needs to be laughed at. When one baby was asleep, the other was awake.. I don't think i ever got one of both of them sleeping at the same time. Jessica & Tim { Washington DC Photographer, Engagements}

Jessica and I met at college. We were both transfer students and both music majors. We were in Sigma Alpha Iota together and ALOT of classes. Jessica is one of the sweetest people that I know and can majorly sing beautifully which is why I asked her to sing in my wedding (4 years ago). I just met Tim, the day of our shoot. He is in the military (army) and seems really good for Jessica. We met at the Washington National Cathedral, my first time ever walking around there. Can i say GORGEOUS! Everywhere you turned there was another photo op, for both my session and for the everyday photographer. I can't wait to go back there.. I might even think about having my own family photos there one day.:)
One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is the LOVE between the two people and this session definitely showed that love i am talking about. AND of course having pizza and coffee, climbing trees, almost rolling down hills, lying in the grass and laughing, I can not wait to photograph their wedding in December. Sweet Baby Chris { Midlothian Newborn Photographer}

Being born 7 weeks early, sweet little chris was just under six pounds when I got to see him at 3 weeks old. He was so little, the tiniest newborn I have ever photographed. I was a bit worried that since I usually only shoot at 12 days or younger that I wasn't going to have a sleepy well posed baby, but was i wrong. Little Chris slept the whole time! The only time I heard him make a peep was when I was about to pack up and leave. I have known Jenn and Jordan for some time now. We went to college together, had a few classes together and even majored in the same thing together (jordan). I was so excited when Jenn asked me to photograph her maternity session, which little did we know we never would do, but instead of maternity was I photographing their sweet little baby boy. Thank you so much for asking me and I can't wait to photograph for your family again. Enjoy your overdue sneak peak~!

John {Virginia Children Portraits Photographer}

I have had children smile, make silly faces, give me "attitude", pose, cry, laugh, but never run away from me. John was my first child to run away when I put my lens to my face. It was actually really funny. I had to catch him in action for some great shots, but it was oh so worth it. John is such a sweetheart, loves his swing set/slide, his papas cart and boat and his trucks. Remember my summer time contest I had? Well Gillian was the winner and we finally got together to do her shoot. HOW CUTE is SHE!
